Picture this. You've just moved into an apartment and have a blank palette to paint on. Your mind races as you brainstorm. Should you paint? Where do you want to hang your favorite picture of your dog? Where should the family pictures go? You have so many questions but not many answers. Luckily, it's not impossible to create a space that you can easily call home. However, there are a few tips that will help you turn your new apartment house into a home.
Cater to your Senses
A large part of what makes us comfortable is based on what we can see, feel, hear and touch. Burn candles in your favorite scent. Hang pictures that remind you of pleasant things or bring back great memories. In addition, choose fabrics and furniture that makes you feel content. If you like overstuffed furniture, buy it. If you're a huge movie buff set up a home entertainment center.
Put Comfort Above Style
Although a black leather couch may be all the rage, don't buy it unless you really like and are comfortable lounging and relaxing on it. Pick furniture that's comfortable and agrees with who you are. You should use this approach to how you decorate every room. This doesn't mean that you can't have a stylish apartment. It just means that you don't want to create a museum or anything cold and impersonal. A warm space will always feel comfortable and unpretentious.
Keep in mind that your home should make you feel comfortable and be inviting. This means that your furniture and lighting should greet you and make you feel relaxed. Your candles should be in scents that relax you and smell inviting. In fact, your senses should be bathed in comfort and acceptance.
